0.3 Homeostasis
Homeo = Same - Stasis = Fixed Remain Fixed/Standing Still
Homeostasis is a process where the body attempts to reach a state of equilibrium. It is literally the core of all physiology. Remember that the body MUST work to achieve the homeostatic effect. It cannot be a byproduct of bruising or damage, but it can be the healing process after.
The body's just a chill guy who wants to stay balanced!
1. Homeostatic Regulation
There are two ways the body maintains a stable environment through homeostasis.
-
Autoregulation - “Auto” The body regulates itself without needing the nervous system to respond. - Eg: Localized inflammation - Damaged cells release enzymes to cause blood vessels to dilate and increase blood flow. Resulting in white blood cells and clotting to occur in that area
-
Extrinsic Regulation - “External” regulation, utilizing the nervous system or endocrine system to rsepond. Eg: Thermoregulation
Feedback Mechanisms
Negative
Decreases the intensity of the original stimuli
Eg:
- Temperature regulation Thermoregulation (Coming out in exam apparently)
- Hunger Response
Positive
Increases the intensity of the original stimuli
- Inflammation
- Uterine contractions
