Vectors - Introduction

Introduction to vectors and terminology:

Scaffold

1. Scalar quantity - Quantity with a magnitude only

• Examples: Distance, Speed, Mass.

2. Vector - Quantity with magnitude and direction

• Velocity, Displacement, Force.

Representing Vectors

Notation - When using online representations eg in the lecture notes or worksheets. It’ll either have a tilde $\vec{a}$ or a bold italic a when typed.

If, however, we have a connecting vector which connects $P$ to $Q$ for example, it would be: $\overrightarrow{PQ}$. in $R^n$ (n dimensional space.
